Lupin III “Prison of the Past” airs in Nov!
A brand new Lupin III TV special, titled Prison of the Past is due to air on NTV in Japan on Friday, November the 29th.
The 27th TV special will be the second direct-to-TV animated Lupin film to air in Japan this year, with Goodbye Partner hitting screens back on the 25th of January. The film is to be directed by Hatsuki Tsuji, who has previously worked as a key animator on various episodes of Part II and Part III.
The special has been rumoured since August, as this was when Yuji Ohno and VAP released information regarding the soundtrack to the film (due out in Japan on October the 23rd).
Prison of the Past promises a fun romp akin to the late 1970’s Part II series. Lupin sneakily infiltrates the kingdom of Dorente in order to bust out a legendary inmate from the facility named “El Guille” and rescue him from his fate - execution. Skilful phantom thieves are about to gather in the maze-like prison from all over the globe - will Lupin solve the mystery hidden in the kingdom and make it out unscathed? It’s an exciting jail break that is not to be missed!
While Lupin dons an outfit consisting of the same colours as his upcoming 3DCG counterpart, the special features an art style that appears to be a cross between 2018’s Part 5 and January’s Goodbye Partner.
Speaking of Part 5, it appears that Prison of the Past will see the return of Detective Goro "Yata" Yatagarasu, Inspector Zenigata’s right hand man from the most recent TV series. Yata’s character felt a little underdeveloped in Part 5 and while it is nice enough to see his return, this also confirms that there may be a plan to continue the show at some point in the future to hopefully tie up a few loose ends.
The special will air on Friday, November 29th as part of NTV’s regular Friday Road SHOW! broadcast. A week prior, the 2013 animated film Lupin III VS Detective Conan: THE MOVIE will broadcast, and a week afterwards we will see the country-wide release of the upcoming 3DCG film, Lupin III: The First.
